Margaret Murray
Marge Murray is an Associate Professor of Instruction Emeritus in the Rhetoric Department and Adjunct Professor of Mathematics at the University of Iowa.
Her long and varied career as a writer, teacher, and scholar includes 21 years on the mathematics faculty at Virginia Tech, where she played a key role in the development of writing-intensive courses in mathematics. In 2002, Marge came to UI to pursue a Master of Fine Arts degree in Nonfiction Writing. Since that time, she has taught a variety of courses in Rhetoric, English, and Mathematics at UI, and has also worked in curriculum and test development at ACT, Inc.
Marge has wide-ranging interests in historical and social issues related to science, technology, engineering, and mathematics (STEM). Her book, Women Becoming Mathematicians (MIT Press, 2000) focuses on the lives and careers of 36 of the roughly 200 women who earned Ph.D.’s in mathematics from American colleges and universities during the years 1940–1959. She is also deeply interested in the historical relationship between science and religion, and current controversies related to neuroscience, philosophy, psychology, and technology.
